Building a local lead-generation site from scratch
How a site built in a mid-sized US market went from an empty domain to page-one rankings and inbound phone calls, without a single paid ad.
The challenge
Most local businesses in mid-sized cities live on referrals, or on directory platforms that take a cut of every lead they pass along. In this market the search results were dominated by aggregators and thin directory pages rather than real local companies, which left a clear gap for a focused, genuinely local website.
The goal was to build a site from nothing that could rank for local searches in this trade, and turn that visibility into phone calls.
The approach
Data-driven market selection
The city and trade were not picked by instinct. We scored 22 city and niche combinations against fixed criteria, and only moved forward when one passed all of them.
- Population between 20,000 and 150,000
- Keyword difficulty around 20 or lower
- Competing Google Business Profiles with under 100 reviews
- Several competing sites with Domain Authority under 10
- Results dominated by aggregators rather than real local businesses
Most of the 22 failed on at least one. One passed cleanly, and that is the one we built.
A differentiation angle competitors ignored
The local climate makes one specific version of this service far more relevant here than the generic version everybody else writes about. We built the whole site around that angle instead of publishing the same broad content as the competition. It gave the site topical relevance that a generic service page could not match.
A build made for conversions, not for looks
- WordPress, customised well past the theme defaults, with its own brand palette and logo
- A homepage of roughly 2,000 words, including verified local pricing information
- Custom interactive components built in HTML and CSS rather than page-builder bloat
- Rank Math configured properly for the technical and on-page foundations
Built to be measured from day one
The site runs on a pay-per-call model, so every ranking improvement turns into something countable: a phone call, not a vanity position in a dashboard.
Results so far
These are the current figures for this project, which is still live and still being worked on. No projections, no rounded-up estimates. As the numbers move, this page gets updated, including if they move the wrong way.
What this project proves
- Market selection matters more than tactics. A weak market cannot be rescued by good SEO, and 21 of those 22 combinations would have wasted months.
- Local differentiation beats generic content. Writing for the version of the service that this specific climate demands outranked competitors writing for everyone.
- Building for calls from day one keeps it honest. When the measure is phone calls rather than rankings, there is nowhere for vanity metrics to hide.
The same framework applies anywhere: pick the market on evidence, build for the way local customers actually search, and measure the thing that pays the bills.
