The 3 Pillars of Local SEO Ranking: Relevance, Distance and Prominence

Google ranks local results on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile and site match the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business is. Every local ranking tactic is really just one of these three being improved.

1. Relevance — do you match the search?

Relevance comes from your primary category, your listed services, your profile description, and the service pages on your website. A plumber whose profile says “Contractor” with no services listed will lose to one whose primary category is “Plumber” and who lists emergency repairs, drainage and hot water work with real descriptions.

  • Pick the primary category that matches your highest-value service.
  • List every service with a written description, not just a label.
  • Build one page per service on your website, plus pages for the areas you serve.

2. Distance — how close are you?

Google measures the distance between the searcher and your business location or service area. You cannot fake this, and virtual offices are a fast route to a suspension. What you can do is target the suburbs you realistically serve with dedicated content, and set a service area that is honest rather than enormous.

3. Prominence — how well known are you?

Prominence is the part most businesses ignore and the part that separates the top three from everyone else. It comes from reviews, citations, links, mentions and general web presence.

  • Collect reviews steadily and respond to all of them.
  • Keep NAP identical across your site, directories and social profiles.
  • Earn local links: suppliers, trade associations, sponsorships, local press.
  • Publish content that gets referenced rather than thin filler pages.

Where to start if you only have a month

Fix relevance first — it is fast and free. Then prominence, starting with reviews and citation cleanup. Distance is the constraint you design around, by choosing which suburbs to target and in what order.

Common questions

Which factor matters most?

It depends on the search. For “near me” queries distance dominates; for specific service searches relevance and prominence do more work, which is why service-specific pages punch above their weight.

Can I rank outside my city?

In the map pack, rarely. In organic results, yes — with dedicated location pages that carry genuine local detail.
