What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization vs SEO

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — optimising your content so answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot can understand, trust and cite it. SEO aims to win a click from a results page. AEO aims to be the source the answer is built from, whether or not the click happens immediately.

AEO vs SEO: the honest difference

  • Target: SEO targets a ranking position; AEO targets inclusion inside a generated answer.
  • Unit of content: SEO optimises pages; AEO optimises extractable passages — a clean, quotable answer in the first two sentences under a question heading.
  • Signals: SEO leans on links and relevance; AEO leans on clarity, structure, schema, entity consistency and corroboration across the web.
  • Measurement: SEO measures clicks and positions; AEO measures citations, brand mentions and assisted conversions.

The important point: AEO is not a replacement for SEO. Answer engines mostly draw from pages that already rank and already look trustworthy. Weak SEO means no AEO.

How to get cited in AI Overviews

  • Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words, directly, before any preamble.
  • Use question-shaped headings that match how people actually ask.
  • Keep facts specific and verifiable — numbers, steps, named tools, dates.
  • Add structured data: Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Article schema.
  • Keep your entity consistent — same business name, address, phone and description everywhere.
  • Earn mentions on sources the model already trusts: directories, local press, industry sites.

What about GEO?

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the same broad idea applied to generative search as a whole: shaping how AI systems describe your brand, not just whether they quote a page. In day-to-day work, AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and most agencies run them together with technical SEO.

Common questions

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. It sits on top of SEO. Answer engines need crawlable, credible pages to cite, so the classic work — speed, structure, content, authority — still decides whether you are eligible at all.

Does AEO help local businesses?

Yes, and often faster, because local answers depend on clear service, area and hours information that most competitors have not structured properly.
