What Is GMB? Google Business Profile Explained

GMB stands for Google My Business — the free Google listing that is now called Google Business Profile. It is the panel that appears beside search results and inside Google Maps with your name, hours, reviews, photos, services and a call button. Google renamed it in 2021, but most business owners and agencies still say “GMB”.

Why the profile matters more than most websites

For “near me” style searches, the map pack sits above the organic results, and the profile — not your website — is what Google ranks there. For many service businesses, the profile produces more calls and direction requests than every other channel combined.

What a complete profile includes

  • A primary category that matches your main money service, plus accurate secondary categories.
  • Every service listed with a real description, not just a name.
  • Correct service area or address, matching your website exactly.
  • Hours, including holiday hours, plus attributes such as emergency service.
  • Real photos of work, team and vehicles, added regularly.
  • Products, posts and an answered Q&A section.
  • A steady stream of new reviews with owner responses.

The mistakes that quietly cost rankings

  • Keyword-stuffing the business name — a common reason for suspensions.
  • A phone number on the profile that differs from the one on the website.
  • Choosing a broad category such as “Contractor” instead of the specific one.
  • Listing a service area that covers half the country, which dilutes relevance.
  • Leaving the profile untouched for months — activity is a signal.

GMB vs your website: which should you fix first?

Fix the profile first, because it is faster and free. Then fix the site, because the profile leans on the website for relevance and trust. Working on only one of them is the reason most local campaigns stall.

Common questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Claiming, verifying and optimising it costs nothing. Agencies charge for the optimisation work and strategy, not for access.

How long until profile changes affect rankings?

Small edits can move things within days. A full optimisation usually shows its effect over 3 to 8 weeks as Google re-evaluates relevance and prominence.
